Stargazer SKetchdump by calthyechild Stargazer SKetchdump by calthyechild
Mostly a bunch of character design sketches, color tests. Half the reason I haven't launched is I have a very precise vision for this comic and it's not my usual style. So, here are a bunch of sketches I've done while working out the design process for my upcoming comic.

Most of them are of Xerida because she's a pain in the ass to draw and an extremely major character. Damn demons and their grid patterns. Leawyn's design is pretty well cast in stone, as well as Caed. I still haven't done full body designs for Mina and Tavar (and they're major characters), or Darienda (though she's only a minor character) and I still haven't figured out Atrina's present time design. I've also started screwing around a bit with the color of the landscape design, though I'm less worried at least about what Damara looks like since most of the time they'll be running around in the wild. Wynd is going to be the tricky part.

It's funny, I usually have the opposite problem, but the entire story is written and now it's the art holding me up. XD

If you have any cool ideas based on the headshots what these characters might look like full body, do let me know!

Well, that's fine, sometimes words are hard to come by!

I agree. Especially if I sit infront of a story of mine grasping my head with my hands thinking of the one word stopping me from completing it.

Darienda and Tavar look really cool. But what really sticks out is the color schemes. Those color keys look very pretty.

As I said to Evergreena... not included in the sketchdump was my absurd collection of palettes for this project. Basically, you can tell just from the colors used in the character designs what planet they're from, what gate they're associated with (and by that their elemental alignment and powers). The schemes are used to tie characters in to each other. I went crazy on the colors as a motif and if nothing else, I'm extremely happy with what I got. I wanted a very limited scheme for each world, so that everything would be distinct, and say, it would be very obvious that Tavar and Darienda came from different worlds just because of their dissonant colors.

Anyway, thanks! I think I've figured out what was irking me, and hopefully that'll lead to good things in the near future. :D

Wow, these are some pretty sweet sketches. I love the design work so far, especially some of the color choices- they're so harmonious yet in a unique way. I hope it goes well for you from here!

Basically, you can tell just from the colors used in the character designs what planet they're from, what gate they're associated with (and by that their elemental alignment and powers). The schemes are used to tie characters in to each other. So while some of the colors are pretty weird, there's a ridiculous amount of thought that went into all of them. For example, even if Darienda's design wasn't obviously alien, I wanted her colors to make sure she stood out like a sore thumb next to Tavar.

I had a revelation today about what's been irking me about the dissonance between my usual art and the style I want for SGG, so I'm doing a few more sketches and hopefully I'll get it right! Thanks a lot. :D
