I took some step by step shots. This isn't really a tutorial so much as it's just kind of a step by step process of what I did. Certainly I'm not trying to explain to you how to digitally paint, just sort of showing how I assemble. I hadn't done one of these in a long while so I figured, eh, why not.
it's really interesting how you were using coloured light and shade right from the beginning, a lot of people wait till near the end, but it helped inform the whole picture
That was the trick! Even the sketch is the color of the shadow, and it keeps everything nice and uniform, the right tints branching out from the start. I used to, waaay back in the day, shade with multiply/screen layers but I quickly found it didn't offer the diversity of options I wanted. Of course, not everyone wants my style, with the color and light all the time.
I like the effect you get on the clothes on characters, all the wrinkles make them look more realistic.
