Chapter Six - 'Like a Dream'

Description

Part of chapter six of Between Places. Mila and Dreshae on the roof.

This page was late in coming. A year late. A year ago I reached the part of the script where I was supposed to tell this scene--or at least, the last page. The stuff before I scripted later, once I'd learned visual storytelling and decent scripting by practice alone. (This is six pages for a webcomic that's SUPPOSED to update three times a week... not quite here on the main archive yet, but that's okay...)

You know what? A year ago, I couldn't have done this. I would've drawn a sillhouette of Dreshae standing there and some dialogue like 'he walked into the room and there she was. Unconscious' and left off most of the setup and just had him go up the stairs and open the door.

I've learned a few lessons about visual storytelling, though.
-Show, don't tell. DON'T. EVER. TELL. EVER.
-Let the characters tell their own story.
-WOOHOO DRAMATIC LIGHTING!!!
-Let every panel tell a story.

I made a goal... a year and a few months ago... I wanted a webcomic that was art. I wanted it to be freaking beautiful. I wanted to be known for the aestetics in my pages, for the quality of my artwork. My first reviewer said that the art was blurry but he suspected by the time it was over it would be really beautiful.

It's not over. But today I'm satisfied that this sequence is art.

I've learned a lot about storytelling. This belongs to a webcomic full of storytelling flaws. I'll be the first to admit it: the script I chose was not suited to the graphic medium, was not polished, and... I didn't know how to write for a visual medium.

I've been meaning to post a sequence of pages on here for a while, I just wanted one that... read well. I think this one does.

I'm very pleased with this sequence. I promised myself several months ago that I would stop posting art on DA that I didn't think was DD-worthy. It made me a bit hesitant to post new comic pages here, but I think this one fits my self-promise. I'm trying to improve the overall quality of my gallery, see? xP

Still reading? Check out the original page one and see just how much I've really improved. [link]

So yeah. Between Places. Today I can say that I'm happy with the last sequence of pages I've done, and I haven't been able to say that for a while. I'm pretty critical of my own work.

Photoshop CS2. Time spent? Well, the second page took me three and a half hours, and I know that because I raced @kyethn of Red Moon Rising [link] to get it done, so probably somewhere alone the lines of 24 hours. :)

Anyway! Read my fantasy graphic novel not funny webcomic too many adjectives thingy, Between Places! [link]
